NARI EDUCATION COMMITTEE PLANS GREEN REMODELING WORKSHOP
Construction has entered an era where green building is becoming not an alternative method of construction but a mainstream method. It is not a new concept but the advantages – energy savings, better indoor air quality, and use of renewable materials – is more at the forefront of clients minds as the build new homes or look at a remodel. NARI Tampa Bay is bringing in Carl Seville with Seville Consulting, a nationally recognized green building expert, on October 19, 2007 to present a full-day workshop on Green Building and the Remodeler. Reserve that date now on your calendars. Details on the workshop, time and location will be available in the near future.
More educational opportunities……..Tony Angel, Tuscany Tile just attended one of the continuing education workshops held as a cooperative venture between NARI and the Continuing Education Academy. His comment was WOW! One of the best workshops he has attended as a business person. Plenty of interaction with an attorney, CPA, and insurance expert on business planning and risk management. There are still sessions available for anyone needing State or Pinellas County Licensing Board CEU credits for license renewal or to just be updated on good business management practices. To register for one of their courses, contact either the NARI office or the Academy’s offices at 813-289-1972. Don’t forget to ask for your NARI discount when registering.
NARI Certification study groups are being formed for 2008. If you are interested in preparing for Certified Kitchen and Bath Remodeler (CKBR) or Certified Remodeler (CR) exams, contact the NARI office at 727-578-2207 or email info@nari-tampabay.org to be put on a list for 2008. A minimum of five participants per certification is needed to form the Study Group with a leader.
UPDATE ON ST. PETE BUILDING DEPARTMENT
The St. Petersburg Building Department held its monthly meeting with Director Rick Dunn. Government Relations Committee and Board Member, Wes Jenkins, CR, was in attendance and reports that the impending budget cuts are resulting in the reduction of eight staff positions. The Department will attempt to consolidate existing positions to take up the additional workload. The Department is implementing a permit PIN number access system that will allow the permit holder to control access to their permit information and inspections. The system is called Master Account and will probably become mandatory before the end of this year. A proposal for an inspection time frame is also in the works in answer to the problem of waiting for the inspector. The City will consider implementing access to inspection times with hopes of achieving a two-hour window for the inspector’s arrival time. If this works it will benefit the contractor who has had to station or arrange for someone to wait, potentially all day, for inspections. A new Notice of Commencement form has been mandated by the State. This form supersedes all previous versions and is the only version acceptable as of July 1, 2007. The updated version is available from the City and from Pinellas County. Be advised that both the notary area and the verification lines need to be signed by the owner. Happy Permitting!!

2007 SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED TO PTEC STUDENT
Ricardo DeGracia was presented with a $1,000 NARI Tampa Bay Education Scholarship to continue his training in construction at the NARI June membership meeting. DeGracia is currently a student in NARI Member Mick Collin’s construction classes at the Pinellas Technical Education Center. As a recent immigrant into the United States from the Phillipines, DeGracia is motivated to learn skills in construction and begin using them not only on the job but also to help others through organizations like Habitat for Humanity and Rebuilding Together. DeGracia’s philosophy is “happiness cannot be obtained through money, nice houses, cars, clothes, or materialistic things alone …. Happiness is in compassion and helping others. I plan to obtain my happiness by volunteering to build homes for the homeless, underprivileged children and their families.” The NARI scholarship is to help encourage and financially assist those interested in entering or furthering their careers in the construction industry. It is given annually to NARI member employees and their family members and students in NARI supported education programs like PTEC. An application form for the 2008 scholarship will be posted later in the year on the NARI Tampa Bay website at www.nari-tampaby.org.
NARI SIGANAGE PROGRAM
In an effort to promote the NARI name to the consuming public, your Board of Directors has authorized the Public Relations Committee to design and distribute job signs to the association membership free of charge. The signs are a continuation of the “Built to a Higher Standard” campaign with the NARI logo and web address displayed along with the slogan in black lettering on a white background. There are two types of signs available: an 18” x 24” coreplast sign with a substantial H wire stand and a 6” x 24” metal rider that attaches to a standard job sign. Again, three of these signs are available just for the asking. Additional units are available at cost for those members that require additional signs. As a reminder, also available free of charge are NARI window stickers and brochures. Please give PR Chair Dan Ashline a call at 727-823-3915 for your free materials. Set yourself apart from the crowd as a proud member of the Tampa Bay Area Chapter of NARI.
WORKERS’ COMP AND YOUR SUBCONTRACTORS
NARI member Mike Herold, AIM Insurance, is always alert to legislation affecting our members. He has passed along information received from FUBA Workers’ Comp that Senate Bill 1748 signed by Governor Crist prohibits anyone from rejecting the Workers Compensation coverage of a sub-contractor that is covered by a self insurance fund because that fund is not rated by a nationally recognized insurance rating service. The bill became effective July 1, 2007.

Strobel Design Build was again noted to have received recognition in the St. Pete Times for his winning entry of a whole-house renovation in the Southeast regional Chrysalis Awards for Remodeling Excellence.
